I don’t think the reality of commitment is understood by most. The reason it’s not understood is because it’s not often taught. The typical mentality is when the going gets tough, you look for an exit. It’s this thinking and acting that causes people to quit, to make excuses and back pedal instead of taking action and moving forward. These things done with repetition quickly creates the fear of failure mentality. This is because the regular outcome is failure, because they quit.
Obstacles are not the sign that we have gone in the wrong direction. Marriage is one of the best images of commitment there is. And if we look at the divorce rate we see that 40 – 50% of married couples get divorced. Now on the flip side their are those of us who make up the 50 – 60% that get married until death due us part.
Marriage is a commitment and a covenant. A covenant is a legal contract. At most weddings the bride and groom say vows like, “through good times or bad times; in sickness or health; for rich or for poor; until death do us part.” These vows are the definition of commitment. You are guaranteed obstacles which is why you make a commitment. There is a peace of mind in commitment, because no matter how hard the hard times get, you both are in it to the end. Commitment uproots the fear of failure, because you take out any option for quitting. When quitting is not an option then success becomes the only outcome.
Think about it, when success becomes the only outcome there is hope. Marriage is a representation of Jesus and the church. A man and a woman become one in flesh. Jesus and the church become one in spirit, unto life everlasting.
Commitment is the guarantee of success. Commitment says: regardless of the amount of effort; the length of time; or the obstacles faced, I will reach the end destination. Commitment says, “regardless”. Regardless means: without paying attention to the present situation; despite the prevailing circumstances.
Commitment creates motivation. Motivation to live, take action, take risks, to work it out. Commitment creates perseverance. Perseverance is: persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Perseverance leaves you mature and complete lacking no good thing. Commitment generates momentum because through perseverance you won’t and don’t stop. Therefore strength and speed are generated. Commitment causes the realization of potential. Commitment pull on your ability to become better. Commitment creates success, because commitment is sold on nothing else but reaching the end.
When you take away any and every option of quitting what you are left with is: belief, faith, hope, love, encouragement, purpose, vision, meaning, identity and the crown of life God promised to those who love him. My good peoples if we change the way we think about this life, it will change everything.
