In Luke 5:1-11 Jesus enters a team of fisherman’s work space.
“One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.”
Jesus is teaching and gets into a boat to give himself some space from the crowd. The boat he gets in belongs to fisherman who have worked all night and caught nothing, They are cleaning up their nets to then call it a day until Jesus got in their boat.
Jesus finishes teaching and then goes to work with the fisherman. Though the fisherman have already worked all night Jesus says let’s try again. You see Jesus knows how to fish. Jesus is an expert. He’s not having these guys venture out on a hope or a whim. Jesus says, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” For a catch!
Jesus takes them out like a master captain of the likes they have never seen. They catch so many fish that their nets are breaking. They call for help from their other boat and they start pulling in fish after fish into the boat. I can picture these guys lost in the moment pulling fish after fish until someone noticed the edge of the boat about to go under water.
Jesus shows up to these guys workplace at the end of an unprofitable day and transforms it into the most profitable day they have ever had. What was their response to Jesus? They freaked out because they saw Jesus was no ordinary man. Jesus said, “Nobody panic you will fish for men now,” and these guys followed him.
Jesus displayed the kingdom of heaven by catching fish and it changed the fisherman’s lives forever. Jesus said it like this, “As the father sent me, so I send you.” We the people of the kingdom of heaven are in the solution business. We bring kingdom solutions to real world problems and people will never be the same because of it. Come on somebody!
