James 2:12-13 says,

“So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free.  There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.”

Jesus shared a parable about a king who wanted to settle his accounts.  He called in a servant who owed him a big debt that the servant could not pay.  The king was going to have him be sold to pay it off, but the servant begged for more time.  The king actually forgave him of his debt and gave him his life back.

This servant however did not return the favor to someone who owed him a very small debt.  Instead he had this person thrown into prison until he paid it off. The king was told about what had happened and here is what he did,

“When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset. They went to the king and told him everything that had happened.  Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said, ‘You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because you pleaded with me.  Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’ Then the angry king sent the man to prison to be tortured until he had paid his entire debt.

“That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse to forgive your brothers and sisters from your heart.” Matthew 18:31-35

Matthew 7:1-2 says,

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.  For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Matthew 10:8

“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.”

The duty of freedom is that we freely give just as we have freely received, or we neglect, misuse and abuse that freedom.  And the measure we use will be used on us.

Jesus said in Luke 6: 27-36,

“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,  bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.  Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.  And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.  But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Children of the Most High think, feel, and act like Jesus.  There is a transformation that is required. Being alive in God looks like something.  And it looks sexy!
