Persistence in taking action with consistency creates growth and progress. Persistence is defined as – firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. Consistent is defined as – acting or done in the same way over time, especially so as to be fair or accurate; unchanging in nature, standard, or effect over time.
I like the word obstinate in the persistence definition. Obstinate is defined as – stubbornly refusing to change one’s opinion or chosen course of action, despite attempts to persuade one to do so. Obedience comes from conviction and commitment. When we discover and define our purpose and vision we find the meaning for our life. Purpose and vision define the direction for our lives as well as makes demands on how we spend our time and energy.
What is your vision for your life? What do you see yourself doing in the future? What would it look like to be an expert in whatever it is you see? Inside of each of us the the ability to become a master at whatever we are called to do. That could seem kind of crazy, but I will tell you what is really crazy – people who have the ability to become what they were created to be but never become it. That is crazy.
Nobody is created to just fit in. The light of the world stands out. Let’s look at what Jesus said,
“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:14-16
No one lights a lamp and sticks it under a basket. The light of the world is not intended to be hidden. Instead you put the light on a stand, lifted up so that all who are in the room get the benefit of the light. That light is your good deeds. That light that is your good deeds benefits the people who are around you. As people taste and see and experience your gift, your purpose and the realization of your vision they taste and see the reality of who God is.
You are unique on purpose. As you define and refine your gift the greater the effect your light has. Earl Nightengale said it like this, “ If a person will spend one hour a day on the same subject for five years, that person will be an expert on that subject.”
When you define what your subject in life is, consistent persistence is what will guarantee growth and progress. And when you sprinkle in a little obedience, you will keep showing up even when you don’t feel like it. Repetition under resistance creates growth and strength. You are created to grow, be strong, and be a master at letting your light so shine. Believe that!
