Motivation is the desire to take action. Motivation comes from knowledge. When you know what to do, why to do it, and where it will take you, motivation is created.  If you have an idea of where you want to go but don’t know if it is possible, nor have any idea how to get there, confusion and frustration occur.

Jesus had knowledge of what he came to do. He says in John 35-40:

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.  But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.  For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

Jesus said, “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.”  Then he said, “And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.  For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”  Jesus knew why he came down from heaven and therefore knew what to do while he was on earth.

John 12:23-33

Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.  Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

“Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.  Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”  The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine.  Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.  And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”  He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.”

Jesus was sent by the will of the father to be lifted up for the purpose of drawing all people to himself. He knew why he was on earth. When his soul was troubled he didn’t look for an exit. He said, “What shall I say? Father, save me from this hour? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!”

The motivation to go through what Jesus went through was the knowledge of the end result. His suffering produced eternal life. He reconciled all things to himself. Jesus was no victim. He came to re-establish the kingdom of heaven. And he did.

When you know WHERE you are going, WHY you are going, and HOW to get there. You will find you have all the motivation you need to get there.
