In the book of Colossians Paul shares a prayer that he continually prays for the Colossian people because he heard of their faith and the love they have for all God’s people. Paul writes:
“For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” Colossians 1:9-14
This passage is epic. Let’s break it down!
It all starts and flows from the foundation of the “Knowledge of His Will”
- We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives
It’s from the “Knowledge of His Will” that we would be able to “Live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way”.
- so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way
This is what it looks like to live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way:
- bearing fruit in every good work
- growing in the knowledge of God
- being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience
- and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.
The reason for such joy and thankfulness is this:
- For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
It all comes down to the knowledge of his will. It’s this knowledge and understanding that enables a life lived worthy of the Lord on purpose. The breakdown of what that looks like is epic. Bearing fruit in every good work, continually growing in the experiential knowledge of God. Because of these two realities, we are strengthened with all power according to his glorious might, so that we can continue to dominate with epic endurance and patience. The whole time overflowing with joy and thankfulness because the rule and reign of the Son he loves is so wonderful.
My good peoples, this is the true kingdom life!
