We have been looking at the story of the demon possessed boy. A father brings his possessed by to the disciples hoping to find Jesus but found only his disciples. The Disciples tried but couldn’t free the boy. Jesus walks into this situation bothered by their lack of faith and then delivers the boy. This brings us to verses 28-29
“After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”
This is a perfect example of God’s will being demonstrated in a situation that seemed to not be God’s will. The disciples tried to free the boy. Jesus sent the disciples out to heal the sick and cast out demons. It was correct for them to deliver the boy. There was just one problem, they couldn’t.
What is your conclusion when you set out to fulfill your assignment to heal the sick, raise the dead, cast out demons and cleans the lepers and you run into a situation where your prayers, and declarations don’t work? For some reason the disciples couldn’t complete their task. Their authority came from God, it would be easy to conclude that it wasn’t God’s will to solve this problem because they couldn’t get results. But Jesus absolutely obliterated this idea and conclusion when he walked in and healed the boy. When you think about the nature and character of God, how could you ever imagine God’s will to have an evil spirit possess a young boy?
The problem wasn’t with God’s will. The problem wasn’t because of the fathers unbelief. The problem wasn’t that the disciples or the father had sinned. What was the problem? Jesus said this kind only comes out with prayer or with prayer and fasting. So why was Jesus able to heal the boy? Is it possible that his lifestyle was one of prayer and fasting? Sometimes he would stay up all night and then meet up with the disciples in the morning. Or sometimes he would walk on the water and meet up with the disciples while they were sailing across the lake. And he often went without food.
Any way you look at it, Jesus was the exact image of the father and the perfect representation of his will. There was never an instance where Jesus failed to heal, deliver, cleans, or raise from the dead a single person. Here is what Jesus said about the will of God and why he came:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me (the Messiah), Because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent Me to announce release (pardon, forgiveness) to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind. To set free those who are oppressed (downtrodden, bruised, crushed by tragedy), to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the favor of God abound greatly].” Luke 4:18-19
Let’s make something explicitly (to leave no room for doubt or confusion) clear, it is God’s will to heal, mend, release and set free the broken, beat down, jacked up, sick and dying. The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Jesus came to bring life and life abundantly. Do not get the two mixed up.
Jesus said when you pray, pray like this, “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Understand that not everything done on earth is God’s will. It’s not God’s will for someone to die by the wheel of a drunk driver. Or die by cancer or any other disease. What God created was eternal and everlasting. Sin is a malfunction that produces death.
The will of God is to have the entire earth represent, reflect and manifest the invisible kingdom of heaven. Never let a situation or circumstance convince you otherwise. God’s will is good.
